Delta State Police Smash Child Trafficking Syndicates

                       
The Delta state police command has smashed child trafficking syndicates and recovered several babies in Asaba and Onitsha.

Leadership reports that Alkali Baba Usman, the state police commissioner, disclosed some details of the successful operation while briefing journalists on Monday, October 19 in Asaba.

Usman said that that operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), who were acting on a tip-off about a human and child trafficking cell in Asaba, arrested one Nkiru Asouza and her husband, Chidiebele Udeagbala.


The police commissioner revealed that during interrogation the suspects confessed to the crime of child trafficking and led SARS operatives to Onitsha in Anambra state, where police apprehended one Mary Bassey Okon and rescued four suspected trafficked children aged 1-5 years.

The police boss said that upon further interrogation, the suspects led operatives to Akwa Ibom state where Ekaete Sunday, Etieno Mary Bassey, Stella John were arrested and two trafficked children were saved.

During the operation, SARS operatives also rescued two pregnant girls, Nancy Atume and Chidinma Johnson.

“The suspects confessed that the two pregnant girls were directed to them after having been variously pregnant to enable them nurse the pregnancy with a view to selling the babies after delivery,” he added.

Usman said that Chidima Johnson and six children were handed over to the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs, while Nancy Atume was handed over to her parents.

Two months ago, Delta state police command rescued eight pregnant girls from an uncovered baby factory in Asaba and arrested the  operator of the ‘factory’.
