My new book will “draw blood”, says Wole Soyinka

                   
Playwright and Essayist, Prof. Wole Soyinka, on Saturday disclosed that he wants to “draw blood” with his latest book, InterInventions.

Soyinka said it is his own tool of “vengeance” against “unprovoked assault of public lies,” many of which were directed against him.

The Nobel Laureate who disclosed this in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, in his remark at the formal inauguration of The Wole Soyinka Foundation, a retreat haven for writers, described InterInventions as “the nastiest book” he has ever written.

Army Purges Boko Haram From Borno State Towns

                   
The Nigerian Army are destroying Boko Haram camps and enclaves in Kerenowa and Chikun Gudu, the border towns in Borno state, as well as surrounding areas.

The troops of the 5 Brigade Nigerian Army have, up to date, liquidated over 20 well-fortified terrorist camps at the gateway to Kerenowa, Gumada and Dogon Gida. The troops have also discovered twin tunnels that Boko Haram members dug in order to conceal their training facilities and access routes from the army aerial reconnaissance and bombardment.

Roads linking Marte, New Marte and Kerenowa towns have been cleared of improvised explosive devices planted by the terrorists.

The Nation reports that on Sunday, October 24, the ex-president took part in the 10th memorial service for the late Stella at the Chapel of Christ the Glorious King within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta.

“I won’t say much about her today because much had been written already in my tribute about my late wife in the book, ‘My Watch’ and part of it says, she will be dearly missed by me, my family and the Abebe family,” Obasanjo said.

Hoodlums on rampage in Lagos State

                            
There was pandemonium at Obalende and Third Mainland Bridge  yesterday as hoodlums vandalised properties and attacked motorists.

The hoodlums, who took to the streets at 5:20pm,  robbed motorists.

They were said to be venting their frustration over the raiding of the area by the Task Force on Environment.

It was gathered that the rampaging crowd also damaged police vehicles at Obalende, just as they set a Rapid Response Squad (RRS) patrol bike on fire.

Besides the patrol vehicles and private cars, it was learnt that the angry touts also destroyed a LAGBUS.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has described the appointment of yet another northerner, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a vindication of his position that “President Mohammadu Buhari is a sectional leader, who sees himself mainly as leader of the Hausa/Fulani, and not that of the entire people of Nigeria.”
The governor, who said he had expected that the new INEC Chairman will be chosen from one of the three Southern geo-political zones, especially the South Western part of the country being the only zone yet to produce chairman of the nation’s electoral umpire, posited that; “Nigeria has entered a one chance bus and it remains to be seen who will save the country from its sectional President.”

Rick Ross embarrasses Meek Mill over Wale

Last night rapper Meek Mill slammed Wale and took it upon himself to expel the Nigerian born rapper from his music label, Maybach Music Group after Wale told The Breakfast Club that Meek brought a pencil to a gun fight in his beef with Drake.

Ministerialscreening: Senate finally screens Rotimi Amaechi


The senate today finally screened former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi. During his screening, Rotimi Amaechi informed the senate of his achievements while he was the speaker of the Rivers state House of Assembly and also as governor of the state.

Speaking on corruption, Amaechi said he is a man that doesn't like corruption and has always stood against it since his days as a Student Union President. He said he finds it difficult to do what people want him to do if it clashes with his standing principle.

He said he is unable to define corruption as it takes various forms and that corruption does not only entail the exchange of money. He said given positions to close relatives who do not qualify for a job is also a form of corruption.

Nigerian Senate Continues Ministerial Screening

The Senate will today, October 22, conduct another round of ministerial screening as nominees will entertain questions raised on the floor of the House.

Topping the list of ministerial nominees to be screened today is former governor of Rivers state Rotimi Amaechi.

Amaechi is the last man standing from the first batch of ministerial nominees forwarded to the Senate by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Out of the first 21 nominees from ‘batch A’, 19 have been screened while one nominee from Batch B has also been screened. With the statistics, 15 nominees from ‘batch B’, and one from the first list is yet to be quizzed.

Boko Haram Terrorists Escaping From Troops Kill 20 In Borno

                           
No fewer than 20 people have been shot dead by suspected Boko Haram terrorists during a raid on a village in Borno state.

Vanguard reports that the large group of terrorists were fleeing a military offensive when they opened fire on the villagers, gunning down at least twenty people in the process.

Four cars were reportedly hit in Nganzai district, just outside Jingalta village, 70 kilometres (45 miles) north of Maiduguri, Babakura Kolo, a member of a local vigilante group informed.

The man who assists the military in fighting the Islamist sect explained: “We received information of an attack by Boko Haram gunmen on four cars near Jingalta village where they shot dead all 20 occupants of the vehicles before setting the cars ablaze.

Yakubu's appointment was approved during the council of state meeting which held at the state house today October 21st. Yakubu takes over from Amina Zakari who has been working as INEC Chairman in acting capacity since Attahiru Jega left office in June. She was appointed INEC commissioner for the North-East.

Law School Graduates 3,600 Lawyers, 4 Emerged First Class

The Nigerian Law School has graduated 3,600 students, who were called to the Nigerian Bar after successful completion of this year’s final bar examinations.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Mr. Olanrewaju Onadeko, while speaking on Tuesday at the Call-to-Bar ceremony at the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja, disclosed that the number included 14 candidates from the previous Bar final examinations.

According to him, “four candidates out of the total number 3,600 that were called to Bar, came out with first class, 109 obtained the second class upper grade, 418 were classified in the second lower division and 1, 422 attained the pass grade.”

The law school boss further stated that a total number of passes at the examinations was 1,953, while 815 students failed the examinations outrightly.

Leadership reports that Alkali Baba Usman, the state police commissioner, disclosed some details of the successful operation while briefing journalists on Monday, October 19 in Asaba.

INEC May Postpone Kogi, Bayelsa Guber Polls

                                    
The absence of national commissioners may force the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to alter the timetable for the conduct of the governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States.

The shift in the dates of the two elections is being considered due to the operational challenge posed by the retirement of most of its national commissioners whose tenure have expired, THISDAY has learnt.

Presently, activities at the commission are said to have been greatly hampered due to the non-constitution of a new INEC management board.

Apart from the absence of duly appointed national commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), INEC is also facing financial constraints occasioned by the freezing of its accounts by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for non-compliance with the policy on the transfer of funds to the Treasury Single Account (CBN) as directed by the federal government.

Police arrest banker for forging WASCE and University results

                       
26-year-old banker, Daniel Makanjuola, has been arrested by the Police in Lagos for using a forged West African Senior School Certificate and Lagos State University’s statement of result to get a job at Wema Bank Plc, Marina branch,Lagos Island.

The police said Makanjuola pretended that he was a degree holder in marketing with Second Class, Upper Division, and had also provided a forged National Youth Service Corps discharge certificate and a reference letter to the bank before he gained employment. He claimed to have obtained the letter from United Bank for Africa, where he supposedly worked previously.

Tension as Edo Speaker escapes impeachment

                  
There was tension at the premises of the Edo State House of Assembly Monday over alleged plot to impeach Speaker Victor Edoror.

Workers at the assembly spoke in low tunes about his possible impeachment, while sympathizers of the speaker stayed around his office.

The lawmakers did not sit till about 5pm and held plenary for about 10 minutes because of executive session of the lawmakers which lasted over four hours.

Sources said some lawmakers were peeved following discovery that council chairmen in the 18 local government paid N2m each to the Speaker for the renovation of the lawmakers’ quarters.

Another source said the council chairmen have been paying N1.3m each to the lawmakers for the past six months.

Some Rivers indigenes on Monday commended President Muhammadu Buhari for nominating former governor of the state, Chibuike Amaechi as a minister.

Mr. Somiari Ogolo, a Port Harcourt based lawyer told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that Amaechi was competent to serve as a minister.

“ Amaechi worked hard and played a key role in the development of the state, “ he said.
